Oh God, Pick GMail

Remember when, GW? Remember when you used to use the CMail client to access your academic email? Do you remember the terrible load times? What about when attachments failed? And don’t forget the new quota pop-ups every other week! It’s the kind of nostalgia I normally only feel when discussing “Doug” (before it was “Disney’s Doug”).

However, it has come to my attention that some students actually still use their CMail portals. Who are these people and why don’t I see them at Gelman, with their IBM computers running Windows 98 and a 56k modem?

Everyone is wondering what new E-Mail service the University is going to switch to: GMail or Windows Live. Please, please, oh God please, please pick GMail. I’ve used both and GMail is hands down a better product. Windows Live is over-stylized and clunky, while GMail is simple and incredibly straight forward.

One company is innovating and flourishing. Another is treading water.

In fact, no server switch is actually necessary. After spending about five minutes figuring it out in 2006, my CMail has been forwarded to my GMail and subsequently deleted from the CMail server instantly. No quota problems. No interface problems. Just a lot more space.

If anyone is interested, I can post the step-by-step setting changes later.

do you know the step by step to get your cmail to run though mac’s email? that would be much easier.

Actually Travis, why don’t you give me a step by step of how you and Gmail went skinnydipping in Google’s swimming pool giving each other handjobs while Windows live took a nap on the front porch?

Ok that didn’t quite work…

Microsoft is not treading water - its latest quarterly earnings jumped 79% from last year.

And Google is a totalitarian company. It has wet dreams about classifying all the world’s information. That’s what Hitler’s secret secret police tried to do (the secret police who watched the secret police).

Max?

Sorry about the whole HDDVD thing.

HDDVD … hahaha, oh those poor souls

the saddest thing is that I still use Cmail - it really really sucks.

Why don’t you stop using cmail?
Get a gmail account & have gmail check your cmail for you.
There are a buncha different ways that all work just dandy.

If you are going to use the Mac Mail client, it’s better to have a gmail account that your mail is forwarded to & then have the stuff sent to your Mail client.

RETORTS:
Who cares if Microsoft is making money, their mail client is just a mutated rehashing of gmail.
Just like Vista is just a mutated rehashing of OS X!

How could you say that Google is a totalitarian company when you’re defending Microsoft? The only reason Microsoft is not wholly totalitarian is because there are so many holes in their system!

I like the idea of Gmail and Google having a licentious relationship only because the image is that of a huge company masturbating.
