A ferris wheel

A dramatic interpretation of Lowis Lowry’s The Giver

My fantasy realized (Discovery Zone for people over four feet tall)

As the dust settles from last night’s debate, it seems like Obama has come out as the winner. In what was supposed to be McCain’s home turf, foreign policy, they battled it out to about a draw. This is bad news for McCain, who was supposed to shine in such a setting.

If you didn’t see the debate, TPM has some great highlights:

Click here to view the embedded video.

The blogs seem to be strongly favoring Obama as the winner, with Time’s conservative Mark Halpern giving Obama an A- and McCain a B-. James Fallows at The Atlantic has a really strong analysis of the whole debate.

If you head over to conservative narrative builder Drudge Report, you’ll see that…

HOLY SHIT! HOLY SHIT! HOLY SHIT! NO WAY!

Drudge links to BBC News with this story: A Swiss man has become the first person to fly solo across the English Channel using a single jet-propelled wing.

You can watch the video of the whole thing here.

Who do you think won the debate? My vote goes to the man who crossed the English Channel with a JETPACK.

On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I’d like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry’s. Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry’s replaced the cow’s milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers–and cows–would reap the benefits [...]Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup…

They concluded:

The breast is best! Won’t you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow’s milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry’s ice cream? Thank you for your consideration.

[all typographical emphasis mine]

Now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now, now, PETA. One restaurant decides to get all breasty & you think both Ben & Jerry should get breasty, too?

Look, people — namely, late stage capitalist barons — ABUSE THEIR RESOURCES. I say it’s best for the world that we keep as many people out of that category for as long as possible and do our best to get those who are currently in that category out of it.

New point (I apologize for the disorderliness, this absurdity is throwing me through a loop and another loop and a third loop):

A few equations:

Cows being forcefully impregnated for to make milk = bad

Women being forcefully impregnated for to make milk = worse

People drinking cow’s milk instead of breast milk = status quo

People drinking breast milk instead of cow’s milk = absurdity

Cows’ exhausted bodies becoming hamburgers = not great

Women’s exhausted bodies becoming containers for broken souls = horrible

People not getting as much nutrients from milk as potentially possible because they aren’t drinking breast milk = bad

Babies not getting the nutrients they very much need because their mothers are selling their milk = horrible

Think child labor is bad? Imagine the horrors sustained by the impoverished just-pubescent who know they will have a definite source of income should they start lactating.

Here’s a quick list of things I think are more important than cows:

Babies

Children

Preteens

Teens

Young Adults

Adults

Elderly Folk

Seriously, folks. Unless Bristol Palin is the first paid breast milk donor, I ain’t supportin’ it.

I want to see this: , not this: .

This may be a new recurring post, in which I make a fun list of everything I’m thinking and/or exposed to in a single moment

It may also only happen once

I am currently at work, interning for Washington Improv Theater. It’s super great. Actually, their last weekend of shows is this weekend, so you should totally check out at LEAST one show. Recent receSs alum Karin Hammerberg is in Caveat. She is also super great and is the person who instilled the phrase “super great” in my vocabulary. So she is at the very least, the reason why you are annoyed with me right now.

I think it’s strange that we’re in the middle of a pretty important war, pretty huge environmental catastrophes, and a possible impending depression all at once, and most of our daily lives remain unaffected. Is that apathy, blindness, laziness, ignorance, or some combination?

I’m pretty sure the Metro could run a lot faster. I think the trains just move kind of slowly. DC is REALLY small, and still it takes like 40 minutes to get from GW to U st. It shouldn’t take that long. Why don’t the trains just go faster? The system is organized pretty well, and trains come on time often enough. But then you get in and it’s just a pretty unimpressive ride.

I still haven’t eaten today.

I have had a Coke. So I did drink something.

The next receSs show is so soon! October 3rd at midnight! Clear everyone’s calendar! Seriously, just break into all your friends’ places and do it. Actually, maybe we should give out calendars with our show dates already marked as “INCREDIBLY BUSY AT MIDNIGHT. HOLD ALL CALLS.” or something

GUYS! Start thinking about your Halloween costumes now. Seriously guys, if you don’t, it’s gonna be like four days away and you’ll be deciding between something easy but sort of ironic and something stupid but almost naked. There’s a third choice, and we all know what it is, but we’re all afraid to say it. Well I’m not. The third choice is a legitimately good costume. There, I said it.

I just had the thought that 10 would be a good round number for this post, but now that counts as a thought, and that’s kind of lame, so I think I’m actually gonna make it whatever I want (most likely 11 or 12, but who knows!? Keep reading! SO MUCH SUSPENSE!!!)

I am anxiously awaiting the next (first) update to Jon Foox’s Sabermetrics post.

Our new site has been kind of buggy, so that update might not come right away. I’m pretty sure that’s also affecting the State of the Uni colony. I’m also pretty sure that I’m kind of responsible for that. Whoops.

Our first DC event is in the works! It is going to be on October 24th and it will be HUGE. Clear everyone’s calendar AGAIN!

Can you BELIEVE I made it to 14? Just incredible. Especially given the state of our nation (see #4).

I should probably find a cool picture for this post.

Please feel free to comment on any of this and/or post your own list of thoughts. In fact, I think this can be a fairly successful recurring post if it starts with my thoughts and continues with everyone’s thoughts in the comments section. That’d be a lot of fun.

The Hell in DC

This little hated hotel has been my worst nightmare. The hotel has tiny room, really expensives for their price and dirty bathrooms (I found a hair in the towels!). The hotel has terrible security rules and the only thing nice is the breakfast. I WOULD NEVER RETURN TO THE ALLEN LEE. The location is great but trust me, the cost is really expensive for such a terrible hotel.

They also charged me twice my credit card and I am having trouble to have my refund.

We should check out the breakfast.

After arguing with the front desk and manager, one patron got what was coming to him:

Nightmare on F Street

My final week at the Allen Lee Hotel , I have reason to believe that one of the staff members place a baby rat in the room. I called down to the front desk and informed the Front Desk Agent that there was a baby rat in room 505; he sent housekeeping to remove the baby rat. I asked the Front Desk Agent if they could place me in another room. I was placed in room 407. Removed the blanket from the mattress and there were roaches crawling on the top sheet. Called down to the front desk to report the roach problem; the Front Desk Agent supplies me with a can of RAID.

And while most hotels supply USA Today, The Allen Lee plays a different card:

Terrifying

I cannot begin to describe the bathroom in terms of staining and total lack of hygiene! I am perfectly happy with basic facilities as long as it’s clean, but this place didn’t come close. But overriding all of that, I was just too frightened to complain - there were a lot of shady looking characters around the building, and the staff unresponsive. The lock was basic and appeared unsubstantial. My main concern was security, I left no valuables in the room, took my luggage everywhere (which isn’t great for sightseeing!), and generally had a thoroughly unpleasant experience, capped with finding a ‘complimentary’ copy of Playboy in my room!

Come visit The Allen Lee! Right next to the Newman Catholic Student Center!
